Sports!, Dream Wife
Earlier this month, I found myself at a bar in Oakland watching a Warriors game and the semifinal of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. This was a new development for me (as was the shot of Fernet I was subjected to that night 🤢!) Though I’d played tons of sports during my youth, I was never the kind of person to follow a team or go to a sporting event at a bar or stadium. It just wasn’t one of the hobbies that I dedicated my time to. So what changed? Two trans men in my life— one of which is an avid fan of women’s sports in particular) gently persuaded/dragged me to baseball, basketball, and soccer games and somehow awoke a love of sports in me. It works out because women’s sports in particular is taking off in a way that I’ve never seen before. And there are more efforts to keep trans folks from playing at all. It’s the perfect time to check out Out of Our League: 16 Stories of Girls in Sports edited by Dahlia Adler and Jennifer Iacopelli and remember why we love sports in the first place and why everyone deserves a shot to play. LFG!

Out of Our League: 16 Stories of Girls in Sports edited by Dahlia Adler and Jennifer Iacopelli
A compelling YA anthology from editors Dahlia Adler and Jennifer Iacopelli about the trials and triumphs of girls in sports.
Ambition. Drive. Determination. Talent. Courage. Teamwork.
Every athlete knows what it takes to win. But for players who are teen girls, the stakes are so much higher. In this anthology, the voices of these athletes come alive, highlighting the ferocity of those who are often shunted to the side. From navigating rampant misogyny to forging a sisterhood through sweat or just reveling in the love of the game, the stories in Out of Our League address the phenomenal physical and emotional power of teenage athletes as they compete, persevere, and thrive, on and off the field.
